What is best and most convincing proof that the Bible is true?

What are the “best” and “most convincing proofs” leaves a good deal of latitude for the person in answering this question. With this in mind, it is important to clarify the word “proof.” The idea of proving something to be “true” is a scientific term. To prove means to allow for replication and repeatability. When we speak of God and faith, much like history or a criminal investigation, we speak instead of evidence for belief in God and faith in Christ. Below are five examples of evidence that support the trustworthiness of the Bible. Read Full Answer.

The Apocrypha & Gnostic Gospels were excluded from the Bible by humans. Isn’t the Bible a human construct rather than God’s word?

It is true that the Apocrypha and Gnostic Gospels were excluded from the Bible. However, it does not follow that the Bible is a human construct. The question is why they were rejected. Broadly, there are different reasons why people reject certain books. It may be that these books do not reflect reality. For example, the Chinese reject a popular Japanese history book that glosses over the atrocities committed by the Japanese during the second world war. Read Full Answer.

The Gospel of Judas paints Jesus & His life in a different light. If truth is based on many perspectives, how do we know which one is true?

Rather than truth being based on many perspectives, it is more accurate to say that multiple perspectives are needed to understand that one truth. God is an infinite being (He is eternal) therefore no amount of perspectives can describe Him fully, and hence we can admittedly speak of adequate and not exhaustive understanding. And, this adequate understanding is possible because God has revealed who He is to us in His Word, the Bible and through His Son Jesus. Read Full Answer.

How do you explain “hearing God’s voice” to someone who is unfamiliar with “charismatic stuff”?

“Hearing God’s voice” does not always mean a booming and audible voice being piped into your ears. This ‘still, small voice’ that many  people claim to have heard is essentially the Holy Spirit reminding us of God’s truth in situations where we are faced with an ethical or moral dilemma or perhaps contemplating a difficult decision (2 Timothy 2:7, John 16:13). How does Jesus expect us to respond to Him as Truth and on what basis?

Jesus expects us to respond to Him as the truth by receiving him and believing in Him (John 1:12, 20:31), and becoming a child of God, on the basis of His perfect life, and death and resurrection in the place of sinners. He calls for us to have ‘childlike faith’ (Matt 18:1-4), modelling ourselves after innocent children not in their immature behaviour but rather in their total dependence and trust of their parents. How do you explain the minor inconsistencies in details of even the gospels (eg. John’s and Luke’s resurrection accounts)?

Explaining  “inconsistencies” is indeed important to our understanding of the Bible. In fact, people use apparent inconsistencies to pass judgment on the whole of the Bible, reasoning if one part is “wrong” then it all is wrong. Yet, we need to understand a bit about the Bible before we jump to this conclusion.

What would you say to someone who asks, “What must I do in order to believe?” I have presented the case for Christ to my friends to the ‘T’. Why don’t they still believe?

The book of Romans tells us that people will not believe because they willingly ‘suppress the truth’ (Romans 1:18), do not desire to honour God (Romans 1:21), love the things in this world more than God i.e. what the Bible calls idolatry (Romans 1:23), and basically are happy with living in deceit rather than truth (Romans 1:25). In short, Read Full Answer.

Do you think the Bible uses words consistently in purpose and meaning? Eg does “days” mean the same thing in the Old Testament as in the New Testament? If not it’s hard to explain/understand the bible since it may lack consistency?

Due to the very nature of words, the same word in the Bible can have different meanings, because the word itself could have a variety of meanings. The technical term for this is ‘semantic range’. Using an everyday example, the word, ‘will’ can mean the ‘faculty of conscious and deliberate action’ e.g. ‘free will’, or ‘disposed and willing to’ e.g. ‘I will do it’, or the ‘legal declaration of a person’s last intentions’ e.g. ‘last will and testament’. How should we approach the truths in the book of Revelation? How do we share it with non Christians?

The book of Revelation should be approached as with all other parts of the Bible, as God’s authoritative Word, inspired by God, and profitable for our wellbeing as Christians. However, the book is somewhat difficult to interpret because of the genre that it is written in. It is apocalyptic and highly symbolic. As a result, it is open to abuse and varied forms of interpretation. Read Full Answer.

How can we trust the Bible? Isn’t it a book written by people and not by God?

We trust the bible because it is the word of God and, as we read in Titus 1:2, God never lies. Titus 1:9 says that God’s word is trustworthy. 2 Timothy 3:15-17 tells us that all scripture is inspired by God and is able to lead us to salvation and equip us for every good work. God used men to put His holy word into writing, but the effects, intents and meanings of the words all belong to God.

If faith is the only thing we have to go on, how can I dispel anyone else’s faith in their god?

As I look at this question, I assume it comes from a desire to want others of different faiths to believe in the Christian faith, and there out of a loving and God-fearing conscience. Firstly we would like to say that the bible does not ask us to condemn or belittle other faiths. The bible does ask us to live at peace with everyone, if possible (Romans 12:18), and to honour and obey worldy authorities (Romans 13:1-7). Read Full Answer.

With so many world religions and “paths” to God, how can Christianity be the only way? Isn’t this a narrow statement that only brings about conflict?

While Christianity teaches that Jesus is the only path to God, this means that other religions also deny the claims of Christianity.
