Why do you think Redemption Hill Church attracts the expatriate community more? Is there a cultural reason for it?

Answer:

At Redemption Hill Church there is a mix of local, “western” expatriates and Asian expatriates. People gravitate to where they are comfortable and Redemption Hill Church is, in different ways, comfortable to expats and local Singaporeans. There are certainly cultural factors at play, and having a culture is not unbiblical, but all cultures must conform to Christ.

Redemption Hill Church’s goal is to be a church that crosses cultural barriers. Any suggestions as to how to better minister to expats as well as locals would be welcome. We also recognize that the church of Jesus Christ is made up of many members (Romans 12:4-5) with different gifts, ministries and callings. The gospel is relevant to every culture, but not every person or local church is called or equipped to minister to every culture all the time.

Ultimately, every child of God must put aside his or her cultural divisions and be united in our primary and supreme identity – our identity in Christ. One goal of Redemption Hill Church is to be a church that has the cultural diversity of heaven.

“After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, withpalm branches in their hands, 10and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”
Revelation 7:9 (ESV)

Regardless of our culture, Redemption Hill Church’s ultimate purpose is to be a church that preaches and lives the Gospel and welcomes people from all cultures.
