Why do denominations exist? Doesn’t it contradict the word of God when He says that if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand?

Answer:

Denominations are a result of both the fallibility and the diversity of humanity. There are differences in nuances of Christian theology that have caused denominations. There are differences in views on church leadership that have caused denominations. There are differences in the belief about on the future of Jesus’ return that have caused denominations. There are differences in beliefs about the “sign” gifts (tongues, prophecy, etc.) in the modern era that have caused denominations. In an attempt to separate themselves from denominations, there are even churches that exist for various reasons and call themselves “non-denominational”. These are just a few examples of how denominations have come to exist.

In God’s grace He has allowed these differences to exist. In many cases the diversity is a good thing. Romans 12:4-5 tells us that we are different members in the same body. A hand and a liver are not opposed to one another even though they are very different.

As the members within a family unit are diverse but live under the same roof, the house is not necessarily divided. There are just differences among the members. In the same way, the church universal is not divided. It is united under the Gospel – the Good News that Jesus died on the cross for our sin. All we need to do is accept this gift of grace, turn from our sin and commit our life to Jesus to experience to the salvation and unity only Jesus can give. This is what unifies the church and keeps it from being divided.

Indeed, every member of the church can maintain relationships with fellow Christians in other denominations and still obey Christ.

St Augustine has some valuable insight in our approach to Christians who are different from us. To paraphrase, we are to have:

- Unity in the essentials (the gospel)
- Freedom in the nonessentials (the method and theological nuance)
- Love throughout

… on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Matthew 16:18 (ESV)
