Why has my husband been drinking for 27 years even though he is a Christian?

Answer:

The Bible forbids excessive drinking leading to drunkenness and debauchery. This is sinful behaviour, which needs to stop. If this is the case of your husband, he needs to repent of his drunkenness, trust Jesus to forgive him of his sins, and in the power of the Holy Spirit, walk a life that is pleasing to God. At the root of this problem is the fact that your husband depends on something other than God in which to find satisfaction, joy and delight. When he is troubled, he probably drinks; when he is joyful, he also probably celebrates with drinking. Alcohol has taken the place of God as a source of refuge and peace in times of trouble and his greatest delight in times of blessing. This is considered idol worship and needs to be dealt with radical repentance and being accountable to mature believers.

As Christians, we still have the capacity to sin against God (Rom 5:12-13; 7:23), which happens. We are in the process of sanctification but are still subject to the desires of the flesh warring in our souls. Praise God that we have a mediator – one who has paid the price that we may be free. He bore the sting of sin so that we may live forgiven and righteous lives for God’s glory. 1 John 3:6 says that no one born of God will continue to sin. If your husband is in this situation of deliberately continuing to sin against God, it is important that he seeks pastoral help!
