Why aren’t Christians doing greater works and miracles than Jesus did, since Jesus Himself said that they would?
Answer:
“Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves. Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.”
It is important when looking at this scripture that we consider the meaning of the word ‘works’ which Jesus mentioned. To believe that ‘works’ refers primarily to miracles, signs and wonders is not entirely true to the context. In this context, it would be more probable that Jesus is referring to his ‘deeds’, which refers to both the words he spoke (vs 10) and his acts. For ‘works’ to respond primarily to miracles, other Greek words may have been used instead; for example, semeion – signs, terata – wonders, or dunamies – mighty works. However, ergos was used which is a broader term including both miracles, teaching and other acts of ministry.
When Jesus says that those who believe will do greater works, he is not referring to the quality of miracles being of a greater degree. It refers to a more extensive ministry. This is because after Jesus ascended to heaven, the Holy Spirit was given to empower believers to be witnesses throughout the world. The works are not greater because they are more ‘amazing’ miracles but because they will be greater in their worldwide scope and will result in the transformation of more lives than the direct work of Jesus himself on the earth.
So the short answer to the question is that Christians are doing greater works than Jesus did, just as He said we would.
