What is ‘Hipster Christianity’ and are there any dangers with it?
Answer:
Hipster Christianity is a fairly new term which refers to a prevailing church culture of ‘cool Christianity’, whereby Christians adopt certain values and attitudes which are perceived to be ‘cool’ or ‘hip’ in the dominant culture.
Some dangers associated with ‘Hipster Christianity’ could be the following:
The purpose of gatherings can tend towards entertainment with great emphasis being placed on seeker-sensitivity. This means that the Gospel message may be stylized to accommodate the current trends of what it means to be cool and be used to serve man rather than to serve God. This can dilute the message of the gospel by leaving out more offensive aspects. An example could be the moving away from a proclamation of penal substitutionary atonement – the necessity of the the Father’s wrath being placed on Jesus, in our place, for the forgiveness of our sins. This message of the Father punishing his Son to this extent could be offensive to what is perceived as ‘cool, hip, edgy, trendy, relevant’ today. If this is the case, the importance of this vital doctrine in the gospel will be diminished.
Another danger could be the pursuit of a more easy-to-swallow, hip-friendly but ultimately shallow faith at the cost of calling unbelievers to serious life commitment to Christ which biblically speaking, should lead to opposition, misunderstanding, persecution and all kinds of difficulties. Christianity is not exposited in scripture as a belief which follows the trends of the world, but rather one that is counter-cultural, one in which Jesus calls his followers to deny themselves, pick up their cross and follow Him (Mark 8:34); for our minds to be renewed in the Spirit rather than being conformed to the patterns of this world (Rom 12:1-2).
