Was Jesus really God?
Answer:
Yes, Jesus was God! We know this by a number of ways:
1. Jesus claims to be God. In John 10, the people tried to kill Jesus because they knew He claimed to be God.
2. Jesus was the creator. “All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.” (John 1:3)
3. Jesus claims to be the Alpha and Omega. The everlasting God had no beginning or end (Revelation 1:17; 22:13). This title is only used of God. Jesus also claimed the divine title ‘I AM” (ergo eimi) for himself regularly in the gospel of John – again, this is a title only used by God Himself to refer to the everlasting existence of God.
4. Jesus was sinless. Hebrews 4:15 tells us that Jesus was without sin, yet all other human beings are born sinful.
5. Jesus claims to be the only way, the truth and the life. No one can come to the Father except by him. (John 14:5) Jesus is not only the only way to the Father, He is the personification of Truth and Life, which are attributes and personifications of God.
6. Jesus claimed to be the king of the heaven, and the voice of absolute truth. (John 18:36-37) The ruler of heaven is none other than God Himself, since God defines Truth.
7. He accepted worship as God. (Matt 14:33; John 9:38) Only God can be worshiped. (Matthew 4:10) Even Angels worship Jesus (Hebrews 1:6).
8. Jesus performed signs and miracles by raising the dead and healing the sick; casting out demons; controlling the weather; prophesied his own death and resurrection. Jesus says in Matthew 28:18 that all authority in heaven and earth belongs to Him. All of creation obeys Him. Jesus demonstrated control over all creation and demonstrates his omniscience and perfect knowledge of the future.
9. Jesus claimed to have exclusive knowledge of the Father and to be the sole dispenser of that truth. His words are the absolute truth and believers are sanctified by His words. (Matt 11:27, John 17:17) No one can know truth or come to God unless Jesus first causes him to know the truth.
10. Jesus forgives sins In Luke 5:17-26, Jesus forgives a paralysed man’s sins, which prompts the pharisees to accuse him of blasphemy – claiming to be God. He then astounds those watching by saying that He can forgive sins and then heals the paralysed man to cement his authority over the physical and spiritual realms.
