If I sin do I become disconnected from God? Is this why I can’t hear Him when I ask Him to forgive me?

Answer:

Unfortunately, sin is the act of separating ourselves from God. That is why God hates it so much. But thanks be to God, Jesus’ death on the cross and His resurrection have the power to reverse the effects of sin. An unforgiven sinner is by definition separate from God. But a sinner who has accepted Jesus’ death and resurrection is by definition never separated from God.

If a believer sins, he might feel that he has separated himself from God. This is especially so if he looks only at his sin. But fortunately, because of what Jesus has done, God does not see the believer as separate from Himself.

So when you sin as a believer don’t look at just your sin. If you stop looking at your sin, repent of it and look to Jesus then you will begin to see the true state of affairs—that you are not separate from God and that God is not separate from you!

If you look only at the sin, even if you feel terrible about it, but not look at what Jesus has done, you will feel the separating effects of sin. But if you stop looking at your sin and rather to look at what Jesus has done you will hear the message that God is inseparable from you. This is what true forgiveness is—quitting the focus on sin and putting the focus on what Jesus has done. This is our joy as God’s people.
