How does Jesus expect us to respond to Him as Truth and on what basis?
Answer:
Jesus expects us to respond to Him as the truth by receiving him and believing in Him (John 1:12, 20:31), and becoming a child of God, on the basis of His perfect life, and death and resurrection in the place of sinners. He calls for us to have ‘childlike faith’ (Matt 18:1-4), modelling ourselves after innocent children not in their immature behaviour but rather in their total dependence and trust of their parents. We have to respond to Jesus in a similar fashion, convicted that He is our Saviour and Lord. Believing that Jesus is ‘the way, the truth and life’ (John 14:6) is more than merely mentally acknowledging that He is the Saviour based on pure logic and rationale. Although evidence presented to us in the Bible would help us determine that Jesus was indeed the foretold Son of God born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, but was rejected and crucified as a sacrifice for our sins and later raised from the dead (Isaiah 7:14; 53:1-12), our response should be one of faith that involves us entrusting our lives to Him by accepting God’s free gift of salvation (Eph 2:8-9). Simply put, it is also a matter of the heart. In the New Testament, we read of different people approaching Jesus possessing this same faith, recognising and acknowledging that He was indeed the Son of God, asking Him for help.
