How do you explain “hearing God’s voice” to someone who is unfamiliar with “charismatic stuff”?

Answer:

“Hearing God’s voice” does not always mean a booming and audible voice being piped into your ears. This ‘still, small voice’ that many  people claim to have heard is essentially the Holy Spirit reminding us of God’s truth in situations where we are faced with an ethical or moral dilemma or perhaps contemplating a difficult decision (2 Timothy 2:7, John 16:13).

Before Jesus was crucified, He met with His disciples to assure them of what was to come after He was gone – that God would send ‘another Counselor… the Spirit of Truth’ (John 14:16-17). This same Spirit of Truth dwells within us when we accept Jesus as our Saviour and Lord and will help to prepare our hearts and remind us of what God said (John 14:26).

The Bible also tells us that the words that we read from Bible, are actually from God’s very own words (John 1:12 Tim 3:16), revealing his nature and character to us. Therefore, when we embrace these words and meditate on them, we are receiving them directly from God, developing an understanding of who He is and ‘hearing’ what He has to say to us. And as we delve into his Word and it becomes a part of us, the Holy Spirit will reveal certain truths to us through the Bible (John 16:13).
