How did God come into existence?
Answer:
God did not come into existence. In order to understand this, we need to see what sort of God is presented to us in the Bible.
As summarized in the Westminster Confession of Faith Shorter Catechism, we read that “God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in His being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth.”
In the Bible, we read that God is everlasting in being and existed before Creation. God was God before He created the universe and his divine existence extends from the unlimited past into the unlimited future.
Ps 90:2 “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.”
Isa 40:28 “…The Lord is the everlasting God, the creator of the ends of the Earth …”
Gen 1:1 “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
In John 1:1-3, we read that, In the beginning [i.e. before anything else existed], the Word was already with God and the Word was with God and the same was in the beginning with God.
From the Bible’s definition of God, we see that God is everlasting – His existence is without start and without end. The answer should be plain. God has no creator. God is the prime mover; the uncaused cause; the creator of everything else that exists. Since God never begin to exist, He never required a cause, nor was there ever a point when he came into existence.
