Does God know the future?

Answer:

Yes, God knows the future. Take for example Psalm 139. Verse 4 says “Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD.” Verse 16b then goes to say, “All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”

Ephesians 1:11 says “In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will.”

The Bible also speaks of a day when Jesus will return and there will be destruction, but for the saints, they will look forward to the new heaven and new earth (2 Peter 3:10-13).

Hence from this sampling of verses, we are told that God is all knowing and the future will conform to His will with the culmination of Jesus’ second return to judge and rule.

This might raise the question, “If God knows everything including the future, then isn’t it meaningless for us to plan and mull over our decisions?” The answer to this is no. Despite God being all knowing, He still requires us to make choices (like believing in Jesus, see John 3:16) and tell us to be responsible for our decisions (for example Matthew 7:21).
