Do teachers have many opportunities to witness? How would one witness to people in a multicultural environment?

Answer:

As a teacher, there are many opportunities to share the gospel. Due to the fact that an International School is usually quite multicultural, there are endless opportunities to discuss the things of God across a broad range of topics, which allow for healthy debate. What I usually try to do amongst the students I teach is to firstly establish what beliefs they do have.

I will then divide those beliefs into common beliefs with the gospel (for example, the belief that God exists or a belief in the sinfulness of mankind) or beliefs which are hindrances to believing the gospel (for example, Jesus is not the son of God). Once I have that in mind, I attempt to work from the areas of common belief as a foundation to build a scaffold towards the beliefs which hinder believing the gospel.

I would also add that a very effective tool for witnessing in a school environment is through my attitudes, behaviour and speech on a day-to-day basis. A lot of what influences the young minds is ‘caught” rather than ‘taught’. Students are always looking for role-models of integrity and genuineness. I try to show my students the fruits of the Spirit, (Gal 5:22-23), by his grace, and model a humility and joy in my daily life, always trying to point to God.
